MODERN & CONTEMPORARY ART

Tuppy Nginya Goodwin

Tuppy Nginya Goodwin is a senior Pitjantjatjara woman committed to fostering traditional law and culture, dancing and painting. Tuppy lives at Mimili. Her brother Robyn Kankatankatja paints for Kaltjiti Arts and her sister Margaret Dodd is a member of the Mimili Maku Arts community.

Tuppy Ngintja Goodwin was born in the bush near Bumbali Creek. Tuppy was brought to Mimili when she was a baby. At that time Mimili was a cattle station called Everard Park but it was returned to the Pitjantjatjara people in the mid 1960s. Tuppy has recently retired from the local school of the Anangu society after thirty years of service.

Tuppy started painting for Mimili Maku in early 2010. Her main subject matter is Minyma Pampa, a women’s Tjukurpa (Dreaming) from Bumbali Creek, Tuppy’s father’s country, where the women would paint their bodies in red ochre and perform dancing and singing ceremonies called Inma.

Tuppy’s mother’s country is on the other side of Fregon on the APY lands. The Tjukurpa from this area is Tjala (honey ant dreaming) and this is another subject for Tuppy’s paintings. Her works are contemporary with a modern perspective. Her distinctive style is vibrant and untamed.
In 2018 Tuppy was selected as a finalist for the prestigious Telstra Awards.
