Maggie Bird

Maggie Bird was born 7th March 1973 at Mulga Bore Outstation in the Utopia Region, located 240km north east of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of Australia. She?is the eldest daughter of Paddy and Eileen Bird and granddaughter to well known artist Ada Bird Petyarre. Maggie is a teacher’s assistant at Akaye School for 7-9 year olds. She likes reading, maths and teaching the English language to the children. In her spare time she enjoys painting with her large extended family at Utopia, as well as hunting for sugar bags, honey ants, goanna and kangaroos.

The design elements in Maggie’s painting are associated with the stories from her country. Her main stories include bush yam, bush tomato, Alpar (rat-tail plant) Seed, and Awelye (women's ceremonial body paint designs). Maggie’s work has featured in numerous exhibitions both nationally and internationally.
