For EXPO Chicago 2025, SmithDavidson is excited to present a curated selection of works by Prominent Australian First Nations Artists Emily Kam Kngwarray, Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri, Rover Thomas Joolama and Barbara Weir. The work by Emily Kam Kngwarray (1910 - 1996) will be celebrated in the upcoming artist survey opening at the Tate Modern London in July 2025.
Bridging the gap between Non-Western and European Contemporary Art with the inclusion of works by Marcel Pinas (Surinam, b. 1971), Karel Appel (Dutch, 1921 - 2006) and Matthijs Scholten (Dutch, b. 1983), SmithDavidson Gallery presents the Australian First Nations Art into a wider art historical framework.
These latter artists bring influences by Non-Western art: Pinas from his Surinam Marroon background which is prominently referenced in his paintings and sculpture, Appel with clear references to naive outsider art and Primitivism, and Scholten with influences that include Black American and Post-war European Art - CoBrA as the most prominent.
Karel Appel is one of the most influential Dutch artists from the Twentieth Century and Marcel Pinas and Matthijs Scholten have been included in recent museum exhibitions at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum Vianen and Museum Singer Laren.
