Unseen

Westergas Amsterdam, 19 - 22 September 2024

SmithDavidson Gallery is excited to announce its participation in Unseen 2024, an art fair dedicated to the latest developments in contemporary photography. Unseen showcases innovative, intelligent, and inspiring works, providing a platform that bridges the gap between established and emerging talents in the photography world.

Amongst the 65 exhibitors, SmithDavidson Gallery will present a Past/Present exhibition featuring iconic and unseen works by Terry O’Neill, Janette Beckman, Marie Cecile Thijs, and Miroslav Tichý. This curated selection highlights the dynamic interplay between past and present in photography.

Terry O’Neill, renowned for capturing the icons of the Swinging Sixties, chronicled the emerging faces of film, fashion, and music, including legends like Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Diana Ross, Audrey Hepburn, and Brigitte Bardot. His work offers a comprehensive portrayal of fame from Winston Churchill to modern supermodels like Naomi Campbell.

Janette Beckman, a contemporary response to O’Neill’s legacy, began her career during the punk rock era and later moved to NYC to document the underground hip-hop scene. Her portfolio includes pioneers like Run DMC, Salt-n-Pepa, and LL Cool J. Beckman’s work, currently showcased at Foam photography museum, will be featured at Unseen.

The exhibition also explores the intriguing contrast between Marie Cecile Thijs and Miroslav Tichý. Thijs’ still life "Glass Gun" from the Rijksmuseum series juxtaposes strength and vulnerability, while Tichý’s enigmatic images of women in his hometown Kyjov emphasize fleeting beauty and ambiguity in gender identities.

Join us at Unseen 2024 to experience these captivating works that reflect the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary photography.
